TRAILS The Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve covers 1 759 ha of rugged scenic mountain terrain within the montane fynbos (heath) vegetation zone, and adjoins the two large Hawequas and Nuweberg state forests. Centuries ago generations of migrating elephants and other game wore a track through terrain now covered by the reserve. and this track was used by the first settlers to cross the mountains into the interior. Today visitors to the Mont Rochelle may see grey rhebok, Cape grysbok, klipspringer, baboon and rock dassie. At least 28 reptile species occur here. Location: North-east of Cape Town. Access: From Cape Town take the N1 towards Paarl and turn right onto the R303; travel for 16 km and turn left onto the R45 to Franschhoek; continue through the town and over the Franschhoek Pass. This road runs through the reserve. Visitors wishing to walk in the reserve should obtain a permit from the municipality. Accommodation: None. Franschhoek has 3 hotels and a camping and caravan site. Other facilities: None. Open: Throughout the year. May close for a short time because of weather conditions; check with the municipality. Opening time: 24 hours.
